Two life-threatening situations kept emergency responders very busy in Brantford early on Friday morning.
Brantford Police Service responded to a report of a stabbing on Helen Avenue in West Brant at 3:50 a.m. Officers investigated to find a 36-year-old Brantford man had been assaulted and stabbed. The victim is currently in serious, but stable condition.
The major crime unit detectives who continue to investigate the stabbing say they believe the attack was not a random act.
While investigating the stabbing, officers canvassed the area and set up a perimeter to assist a canine unit with tracking down a suspect. At about 4:27 a.m., the investigating officers learned a 93-year-old woman who suffers from dementia had walked away from her home in the Mt. Pleasant Street area minutes earlier, in -25 C weather.
The officers investigating the stabbing switched gears to help look for the elderly woman alongside the Brantford Fire Department and Brant-Brantford Paramedics. Local taxi companies were also contacted so that their drivers were aware of the missing woman.
Less than half an hour later, officers found the woman at another residence 650 meters from her home. Paramedics assessed the woman and she was returned home.
“Brantford Police Service wishes to thank their community partners and members of the public for their assistance with this incident,” said Insp. Scott Williams in a press release. “These calls for service illustrate the quick and important decisions that Brantford Police Service make to ensure community safety.”
