Nearly a year and a half later, Brantford police have charged a second man with first-degree murder for the death of Jeff Maxner.
Maxner, 34, was shot on Monday, January 1, 2018 around 5:30 p.m. in Brantford in a parking lot at the corner of Terrace Hill Street and St. Paul Avenue. He later succumbed to his injuries at the nearby Brantford General Hospital, which went into lockdown for a few hours after the shooting.
Three days later the police stopped and arrested Joel Scalzo, 28, on Highway 403 east of Brantford. He was charged with uttering threats. A week later Scalzo was also charged with a variety of drug offences.
The Brantford Police Service major crime unit continued to investigate the shooting and, on Feb. 2, 2018, Scalzo was charged with first-degree murder.
On Thursday police also charged Preaktra Chao, 26, of Brantford with first-degree murder.
Police believe the victim and the accused knew each other and that this was not a random act of violence.
