A Brantford man charged in relation to a fatal shooting on New Year’s Day now faces nearly a dozen drug trafficking charges.
On Friday, Jan. 5, while conducting an ongoing investigation, Brantford police officers found a variety of controlled substances. The discovery led the police to charge 28-year-old Joel Scalzo of Brantford with 11 counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. The allegation is that Scalzo was trafficking fentanyl, crack cocaine, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, hydromorphone, nabilone, clonazepam, morphine, lorazepam and oxycodone.
Scalzo has also been charged with possession of property obtained by crime.
Scalzo has been in custody since Jan. 4, when he was arrested on Highway 403. He was charged that day with uttering threats in relation to the shooting death of Jeffrey Maxner, 34, of Brantford.
Maxner was shot in a parking lot near the Brantford General Hospital.
He was scheduled to have a bail hearing on Friday, Jan. 12, but it has been delayed.
