The Brantford Police Service’s major crime unit continues to investigate the death of a man on New Year’s Day.
The victim has been identified as a 34-year-old Brantford resident, but no name has been released.
His cause of death is to be determined by a post-mortem examination, said a statement from the police.
Police officers responded to a call on Monday shortly after 5:30 p.m. about a man badly injured in an incident near the intersection of St. Paul Avenue and Terrace Hill Street. The victim was taken to the nearby Brantford General Hospital (BGH), where he later died.
While the police has not released the nature of the fatal incident, a statement from the Brant Community Healthcare System said the victim died as a result of a gunshot wound.
Brantford Police Service Const. Shane Seibert said he could not confirm how the victim died.
The BGH was locked down at 5:42 p.m. “in the interest of patient and staff safety as per hospital policy.”
The lockdown ended at 7:10 p.m.
Police say residents and businesses can expect to see an increased presence of officers in the area as they continue to investigate.
Brantford Police Service’s mobile command unit vehicle was set up at the back of the Rexall pharmacy’s parking lot while officers canvassed the neighborhood for information.
