A well-known member of Six Nations of the Grand River has died.
Robert E. Johnson, a member of Six Nations Elected Council representing District 5, passed away on Friday, Dec. 1.
“With heavy hearts, Six Nations Elected Council and its services offers condolences and prayers to all of the families impacted by the recent loss of District Five Councillor Robert ‘Bob’ Earl Johnson,” read a statement from Six Nations Elected Council.
Johnson was a veteran of the Vietnam War and direct of Gane Yohs Community Health Centre for more than 30 years. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and Six Nations Veterans Association.
“Words cannot express how deeply saddened we are,” said Six Nations Elected Chief Ava Hill. “Our condolences and prayers go out to everyone who has been affected.”
Hill said Johnson strived to improve the quality of life for everyone in Six Nations.
Johnson brought the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to Six Nations in 1994, when it was set up at Chiefswood Park from July 18 to 24. It was the first time “The Moving Wall” appeared in Canada.
Johnson also served as master of ceremonies at Six Nations annual Remembrance Day ceremonies.
